How can you help your newborn session go smoothly?

You’ve carefully selected a photographer, your baby has been born, and a session date has been set. You’re so close to having the photos you've dreamt of, but there are a few things that will help make sure it all goes as easily as possible. Here are 5 tips for a successful newborn session. Follow these and you’re sure to get images to cherish for the rest of your life.

Feed on demand.

Whether breast or bottle feeding, feeding on demand will help us sail smoothly through your newborn portrait session. If your new addition isn’t falling into a deep sleep for those adorable posed shots, a top up could be just what he or she needs.

Dress light.

During the newborn session, the room is kept warm. Newborns can’t regulate their temperature well, and as we remove layers of their clothing, it’s important that the temperature in the room is high enough to keep them comfortable. This can sometimes make it uncomfortable for the rest of us, and I know I’ll be sweating by the end of the session. Your clothing choices will really determine your comfort level, so try to wear a light, breathable material.

Prepare for the long haul.

Newborn sessions can take up to 3 hours because it’s all centered around an unpredictable baby. Bring a water bottle, and consider bringing snacks (especially if you have other children). Your photographer may have snacks and drinks on hand, but it doesn’t hurt to have something of your own as a backup.

Also, knowing that your session could be on the longer side, don't plan for it to be the same day as other commitments. You won't get the best photos out of it if we're rushing.

Drive separately.

If you have other children, you may find they get bored waiting around for the session to finish. In this case, we can get the family photos done at the beginning, and then another adult can take any siblings and leave early. This way nobody is feeling stressed, and the session isn’t rushed.

Bring pacifiers.

If you’re introducing a pacifier to the baby, the newborn session is a great time to use it. Baby can suck on the pacifier while your photographer perfects the pose, and then take it out for the photos.

With these 5 tips for a successful newborn session, your session is sure to be smooth sailing. If you have any other questions, your newborn photographer will be happy to guide you.
