If you're having a new baby, I don't think you need to go to a professional photographer every single month. For capturing that monthly progression, pick up one of those cute blankets or sets of signs to do it yourself at home.
Instead, I find it best to save professional portraits for the bigger milestones, and the occasional "just because".
For a new baby, I would say the milestones worth paying a professional photographer for are maternity, fresh 48, newborn, sitter (for a baby who has just started to sit unassisted), and first birthday.
Next, you can add in a mini session when they're around 18 months, and then, in a perfect world, yearly family photos after that.
